The hollow metallic reverberation common to off-the-shelf plastic keyboards is caused by unattenuated sound reflections inside the chassis cavity.

The Double Gasket Paradigm

In gasket-mounted keyboards like the Mode Sonnet and Keychron Q1 Pro, the switch plate does not make rigid contact with metal screws. Instead, silicone or Poron foam gaskets suspend the plate, allowing microscopic flex that absorbs the shock of bottoming out.

Polycarbonate vs. Aluminum Plates

  • Aluminum Plates: Higher pitched, rigid, snappy feedback with higher acoustic clarity.
  • Polycarbonate (PC) Plates: Deep, thocky, cushioned sensation ideal for long-form creative writing.
